On August 25, The New York Times reported that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating the recent near-collapse of the AI hedge fund Situational Awareness, and has issued subpoenas to major Wall Street banks involved in trading the fund and providing leveraged financing. According to informed sources, the SEC has requested banks to provide the timeline of the fund's trading activities and relevant information regarding communications with lenders about borrowed funds, and has asked them to preserve all materials related to the fund. Situational Awareness was founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner and had achieved high returns during the AI boom. At its peak, the fund managed over $30 billion in assets and borrowed hundreds of billions to amplify its investments. However, at the end of last month, as the stock prices of popular AI companies fell and traditional tech stocks that it shorted rose, the fund's losses quickly escalated, ultimately forcing it to conduct a 'fire sale' and sell off most of its stock portfolio to Citadel at a discount. The SEC stated that the investigation is still in its early stages and does not necessarily imply that penalties will follow. Situational Awareness has not been accused of any wrongdoing. The fund stated that it will 'fully cooperate with any regulatory requirements'.
