On August 26, according to Nikkei News, Japan is preparing to establish a payment infrastructure based on blockchain technology to achieve instant settlement for stock and Japanese government bond transactions. The Financial Services Agency, the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Japan, and related financial institutions will launch a research group this summer, with plans to develop a plan as early as the beginning of 2027. This plan will include blockchain design, division of responsibilities among institutions, and a future roadmap. If the plan is formally approved, the system is expected to be built within a few years, potentially operational by the early 2030s, and may further expand into the international remittance sector. Currently, cash settlements for stock transactions in Japan are completed two days after the trade, while government bond transactions settle the next day. The real-time settlement system will eliminate the time gap between trading and fund settlement, allowing investors to reinvest their earnings almost simultaneously when selling assets.
