As Yen Rises, Japanese Retail Investors Increase Short Positions; $23.5 Billion Shorts May Fuel Further Gains
On September 9, Bloomberg compiled data from the Japan Financial Futures Association and the Tokyo Financial Exchange, revealing that as of last week, Japanese individual investors held net short positions in yen amounting to approximately 3.61 trillion yen (about $23.5 billion), an increase from August. In July, this figure peaked at 4.41 trillion yen, the highest since 2015. Japanese retail investors have a long-standing habit of 'selling when the yen rises and buying when it falls,' but as the yen continues to strengthen, these short positions are facing increasing pressure to close. Masayuki Nakajima, a strategist at Mizuho Bank, stated that if the yen appreciates further, some retail investors may be forced to close their dollar long positions, selling dollars to buy yen, which could further amplify the yen's rise. The options market is also showing a notable increase in bets on the yen's strength. Data from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange indicates that the most actively traded dollar-yen option on Tuesday was a put option expiring in November with a strike price of 142.86; the volume of dollar-yen put options expiring by the end of the year exceeded that of call options by three times. The market is currently betting primarily on the dollar-yen falling to between 150 and 152, with some 12-month options even betting on a drop to 140. Meanwhile, Wall Street remains divided on the yen's future trajectory. Some strategists believe that the Bank of Japan has limited room for further rate hikes and that the dollar-yen may face policy resistance as it approaches 150; others argue that if the Bank of Japan signals further tightening, combined with Japanese exporters potentially accelerating the repatriation of overseas funds, there is still room for the yen to appreciate further. The current market focus is shifting towards the policy paths of the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. If the yen continues to rise, the substantial dollar long and yen short positions held by Japanese retail investors may shift from 'suppressing the yen' to becoming fuel for driving the yen's appreciation.
