On August 25, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower court's injunction against Trump's mail voting restrictions, clearing the way for Trump to advance related measures, although other judicial limitations remain. The Supreme Court approved an emergency request from the Justice Department to stay the execution of a June ruling by a federal judge in Boston, which had previously blocked Trump from implementing the executive order in 23 Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C. The executive order signed by Trump in March requires the organization of citizen lists, prioritizes prosecuting officials who send ballots to ineligible individuals, and restricts the Postal Service to delivering ballots only to eligible voters. Trump has long questioned the security of mail voting and has promised to end the practice. Since Democratic voters are more likely to vote by mail, the restrictions could benefit the Republican Party. Previously, judges ruled that the president does not have the authority to change how states manage elections, while the Justice Department argued that the states' lawsuits were premature. As the midterm elections approach, legal disputes surrounding mail voting restrictions are expected to continue.
