Pesto, a king penguin chick hatched on January 30, 2024, has become a point of fascination due to his extraordinary size. At just nine months old, he weighs nearly 50 pounds, which is considerably more than the combined weight of both his foster parents, Hudson and Tango. This remarkable weight is attributed to a combination of genetic factors and the attentive care he has received since hatching.

King penguins, known for their striking black and white plumage and vibrant orange markings, are the second-largest species of penguin. Pesto, being a member of this species, embodies their unique characteristics, but his notable size sets him apart from his peers. His diet, which includes a variety of fish such as sand whiting, rainbow trout, and salmon, plays a crucial role in his rapid growth. As he grows, Pesto will undergo a natural shedding process in preparation for adulthood, where he may experience significant weight loss as his adult feathers develop.
