Supply Chain Attack on Ledger Hardware Exposed Before Large-Scale Wallet Fund Transfers, Warns Former Mt. Gox CEO
On October 10, Bitcoin News reported that former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès publicly disclosed that a physical tampering of Ledger devices with hidden monitoring implants may have inadvertently triggered a coordinated fund transfer across multiple wallets. On October 8, Karpelès warned that counterfeit or tampered Ledger devices with hidden SIM cards capable of transmitting stolen mnemonic phrases were being sold on the market. These implants reportedly intercept data sent to the device's screen, allowing access to recovery phrases displayed when setting up wallets. Such devices are said to still pass official Ledger authenticity checks, as the original security components remain intact, and the verification process cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications. An emerging speculation is that attackers are collecting mnemonic phrases from affected devices and waiting to simultaneously transfer funds from multiple wallets. Karpelès's warning reportedly garnered about 90,000 views, potentially alerting attackers that their actions had been exposed and prompting them to transfer the stolen funds. Karpelès stated that one affected Ledger device he examined came from Malaysia, was packaged with intact heat shrink, and had an implant hidden beneath the screen. The suspected attack vector is an intrusion into the hardware supply chain rather than a vulnerability in the cryptographic algorithms. The connection between Karpelès's warning and the subsequent wallet fund transfers has not yet been confirmed, nor has it been verified whether the same batch of implants caused the transfers. If confirmed, this incident would indicate that even devices certified by the manufacturer could compromise user asset self-custody security if the hardware is compromised.
