Michael Saylor: The Biggest Challenge for Bitcoin's Future Is Not External Competition but Internal Erosion of Consensus Rules
On July 29, Strategy founder Michael Saylor stated that Bitcoin has gained market acceptance, but the biggest challenge for its future is not external competition but the internal erosion of consensus rules. He believes that Bitcoin's consensus rules are akin to a 'constitution,' defining property rights, scarcity, settlement mechanisms, and the boundaries of power. Any modification of these rules to benefit a specific group constitutes an infringement on the economic interests of all participants. He warned that Bitcoin has the potential to grow a hundredfold and become the infrastructure of global capital markets, but a single wrong rule change could harm future markets, technologies, and economic freedoms that have yet to emerge. Saylor specifically cited proposals including BIP-110, arguing that by limiting valid paid transactions, introducing covenant mechanisms, or expanding block capacity, they essentially undermine the neutrality of the Bitcoin protocol. He noted that while these proposals differ in form, they all weaken block space scarcity, increase network bandwidth and verification costs, expand protocol complexity, and introduce new security risks. Additionally, weakening the fee market will affect miners' income as block rewards continue to halve, thereby compromising the long-term security of the Bitcoin network. Furthermore, if one interest group can modify Bitcoin's rules through certain means, other groups will follow suit, leading to prolonged conflict in protocol governance, capital outflows, slowed innovation, and deteriorating network security. Saylor called for keeping Bitcoin's base layer simple, neutral, scarce, and secure, pushing innovation to the second layer and application layer, advancing development through voluntary adoption rather than frequent modification of the underlying protocol. He emphasized that protocol upgrades should be approached with extreme caution and only implemented when truly necessary to preserve the foundation for Bitcoin's long-term development.
