Consumer confidence has also deteriorated. Data from the University of Michigan showed that the preliminary consumer confidence index for August fell to 51, down from 55.2 in July, ending a two-month trend of improvement, with declines particularly pronounced among seniors, low-income groups, and those without a college degree. The job market is also showing signs of weakness. The U.S. lost 23,000 jobs in July, the labor force participation rate dropped to 61.4%, and the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, mainly due to some individuals exiting the labor market, while wage growth slowed to 3.2%. Analysts point out that the energy price shock may be masking the weakening of the U.S. economic fundamentals: inflation is rising due to supply-side pressures, but consumers are reducing spending due to declining purchasing power, and businesses face the risk of weak demand. The consumption sector, which accounts for about two-thirds of economic activity, is cooling down, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve's subsequent policy decisions.
