Staking AAVE tokens converts them into stkAAVE at a 1:1 ratio, with rewards accrued in real-time and claimable upon unstaking or transfer. The process involves two transactions: an approval to authorize token transfers to the Safety Module contract, followed by the staking action itself. Key innovations include:

• Dynamic Slashing: Governed by on-chain proposals, slashing events adjust the exchange rate between stkAAVE and AAVE, reducing claimable tokens proportionally to the deficit covered. Post-slashing, excess funds can be returned to stakers via smart contract interactions, refining the protocol’s responsiveness to market volatility.

• Cooldown Periods: To prevent mass withdrawals during crises, unstaking requires a 10-day cooldown (extended to 20 days in recent upgrades), during which stakers retain voting rights but cannot access funds. Transfers of stkAAVE reset cooldown timers for recipients, ensuring alignment between risk exposure and governance participation.

Reward Distribution and Incentive Structures

Safety Incentives originate from the Aave Ecosystem Reserve, initially distributing 400 AAVE daily before community votes increased allocations to 550 AAVE to offset slashing risks. Rewards are proportional to staked amounts and distributed as stkAAVE, compounding yields through automatic restaking unless manually claimed. Protocol fees, though not directly distributed to stakers, contribute to the reserve’s sustainability, with future governance proposals potentially enabling fee-sharing models.
