On August 26, a joint statement from Iran and Oman revealed: "During a working visit to Iran, His Excellency Omani Foreign Minister Busaidi held constructive consultations with Iranian Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian. The discussions focused on a highly prioritized issue for both countries, namely the restoration of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while maintaining each country's sovereignty and sovereign rights. In light of recent wars and their disastrous consequences that have altered the current situation in the strait, the two foreign ministers discussed a phased implementation framework that could provide a practical and feasible basis for advancing the situation. The proposed framework includes the establishment of a temporary joint maritime corridor in the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement to implement a joint project for clearing mines in the strait. Both sides will continue technical discussions with the aim of reaching an agreement on the establishment of a permanent maritime corridor, future management of the strait, and mechanisms for traffic management information exchange and related maritime and security services. In this regard, both sides emphasized the necessity of holding joint dialogues with the Gulf coastal states. Additionally, both parties stressed the importance of adhering to applicable international law and respecting the sovereign rights of coastal states.

In a recent announcement at the Hot Chips conference, IBM unveiled its next-generation dual-architecture mainframe processor, which allows the same chip to natively run both the IBM mainframe instruction set and the Arm instruction set. This chip can switch between the two architectures at nanosecond speeds without the need for emulation or conversion. Built using a 2-nanometer process, it features 11 cores with a base frequency exceeding 5.7GHz and includes an AI inference accelerator capable of executing AI tasks such as fraud detection directly during financial transaction processing. This development means that institutions like banks can introduce modern AI software ecosystems into their mainframe systems without rewriting decades-old mainframe code or deploying separate AI servers. IBM stated that this processor is the first significant outcome of its collaboration with Arm, which began in April 2026. By supporting the Arm architecture, IBM mainframes will gain direct access to a vast Arm software ecosystem and AI development frameworks. Currently, many large financial institutions worldwide still heavily rely on mainframe systems. IBM's strategy is not to replace traditional mainframes but to extend their lifecycle by integrating Arm and AI capabilities. However, the specific market release date for this chip has not yet been announced, and commercialization will depend on future developments.
