The market believes that the energy supply shock from the Iran war is exacerbating economic pressures in the U.S. The Federal Reserve previously stated that the Middle East conflict has led to rising energy prices, pushing up inflation levels, while household consumption growth remains 'very modest.' Consumer confidence has also deteriorated. Data from the University of Michigan showed that the preliminary consumer confidence index for August fell to 51, down from 55.2 in July, ending a two-month trend of improvement, with declines particularly pronounced among seniors, low-income groups, and those without a college degree. The job market is also showing signs of weakness. The U.S. lost 23,000 jobs in July, the labor force participation rate dropped to 61.4%, and the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, mainly due to some individuals exiting the labor market, while wage growth slowed to 3.2%. Analysts point out that the energy price shock may be masking the weakening of the U.S. economic fundamentals: inflation is rising due to supply-side pressures, but consumers are reducing spending due to declining purchasing power, and businesses face the risk of weak demand. The consumption sector, which accounts for about two-thirds of economic activity, is cooling down, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve's subsequent policy decisions.
