On August 26, Ethereum developers introduced a new EIP draft aimed at restructuring the existing validator deposit contract to facilitate the migration of Ethereum's staking system to post-quantum cryptography. The proposal plans to change the fixed BLS key structure of the current contract to support variable-length keys and credential data, with a single item limit of up to 8192 bytes, and requires each deposit declaration to specify the 'credential scheme' used. Currently, only Scheme 0 is defined, which corresponds to the existing BLS signature system; future EIPs may further define post-quantum validator key standards. The new contract will also introduce three states: 'disabled', 'BLS enabled', and 'BLS permanently retired'. Once a system call enters the BLS retirement state, it will permanently prohibit the addition of new validator stakes using the existing BLS scheme, and it cannot be re-enabled. This proposal is still in the draft stage and awaits EIP editor review; the contract address, deployment code, and activation time are yet to be determined, and its final implementation will require coordination between Ethereum's consensus layer and execution layer for an upgrade. One of the proposal authors, Thomas Coratger, noted that post-quantum cryptography is not a simple software upgrade. Current Ethereum research is highly focused on hash-based signature schemes, whose stateless version has a signature size of about 8KB, which closely matches the 8192-byte limit set by the new contract. Previously, the Ethereum Foundation had formed a post-quantum security team. Research indicates that over 65% of ETH is currently held in addresses where the public key has been exposed on-chain, and the potential threat of quantum computing to the existing elliptic curve signature system is gradually becoming a long-term security issue for Ethereum.
