Criminal groups lure ordinary citizens with the bait of 'free credit card repayment' by recruiting agents and bringing in new participants, offering rewards of several dozen yuan to entice them to provide credit card and identity information. Some individuals unknowingly become part of the money laundering chain. For example, in a case from Baotou, starting in October 2023, the group connected with overseas online gambling and telecom fraud networks to 'clean' illicit funds through fictitious consumption, then contacted cryptocurrency dealers to convert the funds into virtual currency, ultimately transferring the illegal money to designated virtual currency addresses abroad. The case involved nearly a thousand accounts, with individuals scattered across Inner Mongolia, Shandong, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Chongqing. Police, in collaboration with the Digital Currency Research Institute of the People's Bank of China, conducted joint analysis using financial accounts and on-chain data to uncover the complete criminal network and carry out nationwide simultaneous operations. Seven members of the involved group were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year and two months to two years and six months for illegally engaging in payment settlement business without approval, along with fines. The central bank stated that money laundering using cryptocurrency is a new type of crime that has emerged in recent years, and it continues to utilize large models and on-chain data analysis technology to track the flow of funds and identify criminal groups. In recent years, relevant authorities have dismantled over ten money laundering and score-running dens, confiscating illegal gains of approximately 130 million yuan.
