Collaborative Development

The BGCI emerged from a partnership between Bloomberg, a global leader in financial data and analytics, and Galaxy Digital, a digital asset merchant bank founded by former hedge fund manager Michael Novogratz. Announced in May 2018, this collaboration combined Bloomberg’s indexing expertise with Galaxy Digital’s insights into cryptocurrency markets, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional finance and digital assets. Novogratz, a prominent advocate for institutional crypto adoption, emphasized the index’s role in bringing unprecedented transparency to the sector.

Governance Framework

Bloomberg oversees the index’s administration, adhering to principles of data integrity, methodological rigor, and operational transparency. A dedicated Benchmark Oversight Committee ensures compliance with regulatory standards and reviews any deviations from established procedures. Galaxy Digital contributes custody and trading feasibility assessments, ensuring that index constituents can be securely held and transacted by institutional participants.
